Description:

Maximum 10 Minimum 4

The Washington Color School used color, not drawing, to produce simple flat geometric forms. The visual experience is more important than the subject matter. They used pure, not shaded color to create an immediate visual experience. The Washington Color School painters were from Washington, D.C. and the style grew out of Color Field painting.

You do not need to know how to draw to produce successful Washington Color School paintings. You do not need to be an experienced painter to produce wonderful paintings in this style. Likewise, if you are an experienced painter, these paintings are different from realistic painting. You will have a handout to take notes if you wish.

We will aim to cover three painters. I will discuss each painter and their paintings, show examples of their paintings and demonstrate techniques.
