Fun w Fur and Feathers Pastel Paint

Session One – Fun with Fur

In this session the participants will prepare one surface to paint on. A 4-value sketch will be of the image to be painted, and that image will be drawn on the prepared surface.

The participants will see examples of finished pastel paintings with texture.

1. A demonstration of the process will be observed.

2. A layer of pumice gel will be applied to the gator board.

3. The participant will select an image of an animal to paint.

4. The participant will create a 4-value study of the image selected.

5. The image will be sketched on the dry gator board surface and painted with pastel.

Session Two – Fun with Feathers

In this session the participants will prepare one surface to paint on. A 4-value sketch will be of the image to be painted, and that image will be drawn on the prepared surface.

1. . A demonstration of the process will be observed.

2. A layer of pumice gel will be applied to the gator board.

3. The participant will select an image of a bird to paint.

4. The participant will create a 4-value study of the image selected.

5. The image will be sketched on the dry gator board surface and painted with pastel.

Materials:

• Two (8 X 10) pieces of gator board
• b. Gel pumice for textured surface
• c. Colourfix Primer for textured surface
• d. Small sponges
• e. Pieces of sandpaper
• Participants Will Provide Their Own: 1 OLD paint brush, hard pastels, soft pastels, photo references, sketch book and drawing pencils.
• Ideas for photo references:
• a. Birds such as: roadrunners, quail, ravens, hummingbirds, swans, sandhill cranes, blue heron – any bird you find interesting
• b. Animals such as: sheep, dogs, cows, kittens, bear, bobcats – any animal you find interesting
• Session 2 materials:
• 1. Soft pastels – a variety of colors and values from the pastels you have available
• 2. A small set of hard pastels
• 3. Vine charcoal
• 4. Apron
• 5. Paper towels
• 6. One OLD brush to apply pastel primer
• 7. Good images of birds AND animals
• 8. Sketchpad – (I like a 9 X 12 gray toned sketch pad.)

Objectives:

1. The goal for this workshop is to provide participants with the opportunity to experiment with textured surfaces for a pastel painting. A textured surface provides a fun and exciting surface to paint animals or birds.
