Monet painted fields of flowers, vases of flowers and waterlilies. You too can paint flowers in the style and technique of Monet. He was one of the founders of Impressionism. We will go over the principles of Impressionism as it relates to his flower painting.
If you wish, the instructor will critique but not criticize your art work.
Note: The instructor will help you but will not work on your painting.
This course is for both new and experienced painters. You may use oil, acrylic, water soluble oil, gouache or watercolor.
Materials:
- Supplies
- Plastic sheet to cover your table
- Oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor or water soluble oil paints
- Paint colors
- Titanium White
- Zinc Yellow or Hansa Yellow Light
- Cadmium Yellow Medium
- Phthalocyanine [Phathalo] Green OR Viridian Green
- French Ultramarine Blue
- Cobalt Blue
- Alizarin Crimson OR Quinacridone Red
- Vermilion Hue OR Cadmium Red Medium Hue
- Acrylic, water soluble oil, gouache or watercolor: Two containers to hold water
- Oil paint: odorless mineral spirits to clean your brushes
- Oil paint: two containers with tops to hold mineral spirits
- Soft paper towels
- Liquid soap or a bar of Ivory soap
- HB or #2 pencil
- Vinyl easer
- Palette - such as: white Styrofoam plates OR white Corel plate
- Painting surface size and number
- Your choice of size
- One or two per class session
- Oils or Acrylic paints:
- Stretched canvas
- Canvas board
- Masonite [gesso before class]
- Birch plywood [gesso before class]
- Watercolors and gouache: 120 lb. paper or heavier
- o. Brushes: bristle and/or synthetic brushes:
- i. Flat brushes
- ii. Round brushes
- iii. Big brushes for big paintings – small brushes for small paintings
- Pastel
- Sticks: 12 or larger piece soft pastel set
- Eraser : Kneaded eraser
- Paper: 18”x24” or larger acid-free pastel paper or 300 grit or higher sandpaper
- Supplies: Soft paper towels, cotton balls, Q-tips
- Optional: plastic gloves
Objectives:
- You will learn how Monet painted fields of flowers, vases of flowers and waterlilies: his color schemes, pigments paint application, brushwork, composition, and Impressionistic principles. You will have the opportunity to produce one or more paintings of fields of flowers, vases of flowers and waterlilies.
